The World is Your Oyster

I have a manta which I kept to myself. I kept it a secret because I do not want to be judge if people will hear it.

I was raised on a poor family where tomorrow’s food is uncertain.

Going to elementary school with faded uniform and holes on my socks. I did not perform well because it is uncomfortable where your classmates is wearing Nike Air shoes and G-Shock watches with lights inside that looks like a dolphin; and you feel you do not belong. I am always on section one which only have three categories; smart people, child of a teacher and rich people. It’s difficult to make friends on a materialistic world.

This has changed on the sixth year where they do the great experiment. They divided section one and two to scattered on lower section. The theory is lower section will perform better if mixed with smart people. Well, I do not know about that but they give me a way out and I find myself where I belong. I found new friends and at the same social class. They may not be smart or wear the latest Casio but I found comrades that was almost a family.

High school came and everything returns to the cursed normal. Cast system in all of it’s glory was deployed and I found myself trap again. I managed to create new friends on lower sections but I’m still uncomfortable to stay inside the class. I am growing thinking that the only difference between people is money; the root of all evil.

I wanted to conquer the world to change my fate. Then I decided my mantra:

“The World is Your Oyster”

I study hard for the entrance exams for the universities. I am accepted on Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Mapúa University Manila and AMA University. Three university at my disposal. Deciding is easy, PUP is the obvious choice because it is the poor man’s university. I finished my Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering exactly 5 years as expected and I graduated on Friday and started working as a Software Engineer on Monday. It’s simple, I do job hunting even I am not graduate yet. After that, every path I take is big step and only I take the biggest step possible.

All of my decisions in life is based on the mantra of the childhood version of me that I can do everything and if it did not go exactly as plan, I can still turn it around. I know that the world is your oyster does not mean like that but the child version of me think that it means like that and simply because there is no internet yet.

Looking back on my elementary and high school days is I found it pathetic and silly because both of that schools are public which is subsided by the government. It means all off us are poor and nobody is above each other. Well, we are all children back then.

I do not consider myself successful yet because I have not accomplished my goal but what I am trying to say is a simple mantra can be a driving force in your life to get you where you want to be.

How about you?
What is your mantra in life?
