How I Handle My Anxiety
Published on: February 16, 2020
The modern world gives us all the convenience life can offer. Buy things online, watch movies on demand even food is delivered in your door step. We are living the in the Axion World. A reference to Disney’s WALL-E. Kind to think of it, WALL-E could be means and Electronic Wall since we stop talking in person and just digitally on the net.
Anyway, going back to the topic. First is you must identify what is the source of your anxiety.
I’m a software engineer and can be coding for days continuously just to beat the dead line. Do not believe YouTube videos with titles Life in a Day of a Software Engineer/Developer/Programmer where they are on a well light room, slim and good looking people. The reality is you will do coding hours straight, a standard fluorescent lighting, eating whatever food is available and physically unfit people with lousy hair cut. Days of programming burns out your brain, understanding the requirements, testing and optimizing the code. This is causing my anxiety, the feeling if you did everything correct and did not commit a mistake.
If I stop coding after days, I feel I have an enemy somewhere that does not exist. I feel I have an argument with someone but it did not happen. My anxiety manifested as a ghost person that lingers wherever I go.
Now, think where does your anxiety came from?
Ready?
Ok now the answer is simple. You run away from it. Your anxiety is only in your mind. A feeling that lingers. It was your brain betraying you.
I usually do is took some time off in programming as possible. Always take the weekend off. Away from your desktop.
I do have two phones and two computers. One set for work and one set as personal. I trick my mind that he is seeing a different items that is not associated to work which is by all definition is my anxiety so my mind can still relax even on front of a computer.
Next is going back to WALL-E, start talking to people. Let’s get back what is lost; human conversation. Join a club or group that do physical activities. I am active member of a hiking group in the Philippines. I started to like meeting people and having a nice conversation.
I also recommend iCan app by Donald MacKinnon which is available of iPhone and iTunes. This app help me to relax if needed. It works and I can assure it.

Just keep yourself busy as you can. Your brain can not think of it’s anxiety if it is thinking other things.
You brain can not chase two rabbits at the same time. Tell your brain to chase Zootopia’s Judy Hopps and not Donnie Darko’s rabbit.
