Take A Hike
Published on: January 10, 2021
Hiking is hard. That’s it.
Well, this article is short. But in all of seriousness, I keep hiking not as a hobby but as an obligation to myself.
Going on a hike in the Philippines is a serious commitment. You will pay in advance somebody in the internet as a reservation so be sure you trust the organizer. The meet up is normally at midnight (12AM) so you will probably come from work on a Friday and go to home just to pack your things. You will sleep in the vehicle to gain strength which up to this day is I can not.
Then the actual climb. Most of the mountains in the Philippines is rocky, muddy and the elevation is drastic that it is more climbing than hiking. You will start hiking around 4AM which is still dark.
So what’s the perk? You will forgot why you join in the first place. You are too tired to think about it. You are too busy knowing your new buddies, who they are and where they came from. You forgot all of your problems and your all of your baggages are no more.
Yes that is the perk, a temporary relief to the madness of living and working in the city. You forget that you are in the rat race because all of you are not on the race anymore but on a parade. Your eye’s fatigue is gone because you are overwhelmed of the scenery and suddenly you can see again clearly like a child.
I have lots of beautiful hike but I choose specially that simple photo above as a banner. On April 22, 2018 I take on the Seven-Peak Hike Mt. Kalbo (660MASL) in Rizal. When descending after the last peak, I injured my left foot that it’s difficult to walk. They help me to walk one step at a time and lift most of my weight so I can step easily. I feel ashamed, embarrassed but mostly thankful for having this one memory that I will cherish.
There was no competition, no drama, no politics, no positions, no rank, no money (hehe), nothing but pure human beings trying to go where no man/woman had gone before. Well, probably you are not the first because of the local that is living near in the place but you get the point.
Joining a group of people with one common goal, isn’t that the purpose of humanity? Try it for yourself, you will regret it tomorrow because of the body pains but on the day after tomorrow, it will be just pure happy memory.
